How To Watch The Simpsons In Its Original Aspect Ratio On Disney+
How To Watch The Simpsons In Its Original Aspect Ratio On Disney+-September 2024
Sep 21, 2024 1:45 PM

It's taken more than six months, but Disney+ subscribers can finally watch earlier seasons of The Simpsons in their original aspect ratio. The service launched back in November with all 30 seasons of The Simpsons in 16:9, meaning that the first 19 seasons were cropped from their original 4:3 ratio. But now viewers can choose which ratio they watch in.

The aspect ratio can be selected from the details tab of each episode. Fans will notice a new addition to that page--an on/off slider marked 'Remastered Aspect Ratio.' Putting the slider on means the episode will play in 16:9, while leaving it off means that you can watch it in the original 4:3.

In November, Disney defended its initial decision to release every season in 16:9 by stating it would "guarantee visual quality and consistency across all 30 seasons." The main issue for fans was that that those earlier seasons were made in 4:3. By putting them into widescreen, part of the top and bottom of the image were cropped out, which affected many of the visual jokes throughout the seasons.

For example, in the Season 4 episode "Duffless," the joke that all three varieties of Duff beer in fact come from the same pipe was ruined by the cropping. Check out the comparisons between the two aspect ratios below:

As well as the regular seasons of the The Simpsons, fans are now able to enjoy some of the show's short films on Disney+ too. 2012's Oscar-winning The Longest Daycare is available from this week, as well as the new short Playdate with Destiny, which arrived in April.

In related news, veteran Simpsons actor Hank Azaria recently spoke about his decision to stop voicing Apu on the show. The Indian-American character has appeared in the Simpsons since the very first season in 1990, but in more recent years, the show has become accused of racial stereotyping. "Once I realized that that was the way this character was thought of, I just didn't want to participate in it anymore," Azaria said. "It just didn't feel right."
