How Big Is PS5? Fans Are Trying To Find Out, And It Seems Huge-September 2024
Sep 23, 2024 2:31 AM

Sony revealed a ton of next-gen news during its PS5 reveal event, including the design of the PlayStation 5 itself. And while we finally know what the console looks like--and its design is certainly divisive, to say the least--one mystery among many is just how big the console is, both on the entertainment center and when compared to other systems out right now. Sony hasn't detailed specific dimensions yet, but gaming fans have taken to doing the legwork necessary to cull together some semblance of size for the upcoming PS5.

To say that it's "huge" would be an understatement, if the myriad unofficial dimensions floating around the internet are anything to go by. A side-by-side comparison done by game consultant Callum Underwood on Twitter, in which he compares the sizes of modern consoles by their disc drives and USB ports, shows that the PlayStation 5 is a "big big boi." It's even bigger than the PlayStation 3, which was also massive for its time.

Taking it a step further, with some "hard" numbers, a Reddit post took the same approach--comparing systems by their disc drives and USB ports--and found that the PS5 towers over the Xbox Series X. Again, none of these numbers for the PlayStation 5 are official, but they suggest that the PS5 sits at just about 15 inches tall and 3.5 inches wide. For comparison, though Microsoft hasn't shared definitive dimensions yet either, a Digital Foundry report states the XSX stands approximately 12 inches tall and 6 inches wide.

To bring it to current-gen consoles, the original PS4 is about 12 inches tall and 2 inches wide, while the original Xbox One is 13 inches tall and 3 inches wide. While there are upgraded models of both systems--in the form of the PS4 Slim, PS4 Pro, Xbox One S, and Xbox One X--neither seems to come close to the size of the Xbox Series X. And, if these rough estimates are to be believed, it seems the PlayStation 5 is on track to become the biggest console on the market to date. We'll have to wait for Sony's official statement on dimensions to determine just how big the PS5 really is.

Though no pricing or exact release date--aside from the vague "Holiday 2020" window--have been confirmed yet, you can sign-up to be notified when PlayStation 5 pre-orders go live.
