Hover, considered to be one of the spiritual successors to SEGA's Jet Set Radio series, has been available on PC for over a year after its successful Kickstarter campaign.

Now, however, it's about to launch on all the latest generation consoles by Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo. We got in touch with Jérémy Zeler-Maury, CEO of Midgar Studio, and he provided the technical specifications for each version. Xbox One and PlayStation 4 gamers can choose between two preset modes, graphics and performance, while Nintendo Switch users will get a resolution boost if they dock their console as with basically every other game on the platform.

When it comes to graphics effects, the Nintendo Switch has the least postprocessing with only FXAA and Bloom active. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One add SSAO (Screen Space Ambient Occlusion) to the above, while PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X go one step beyond with TAA (Temporal Anti-Aliasing), HBAO (Horizon Based Ambient Occlusion) and Contact Shadows.

  Xbox One:

  Graphics 1920x1080 30fps

  Performance 1920x1080 45fps

  PlayStation 4

  Graphics 1920x1080 30fps

  Performance 1920x1080 60fps

  Xbox One X

  Graphics 3840x2160 30fps

  Performance 2560x1440 60fps

  PlayStation 4 Pro

  Graphics 2560x1440 30fps

  Performance 1920x1080 60fps

  Nintendo Switch

  Docked: 1824x1026 30fps

  Undocked: 1280x720 30fps

The game will also support High Dynamic Range (HDR) displays, but only on consoles (except Nintendo Switch) since the development team doesn't have HDR hardware for PC and they're not sure if the Unity engine that runs the game would handle HDR on PC.

Chris spent some time with Hover at Gamescom 2018 and liked what he played. The full game is out on September 18th for PlayStation 4, September 19th for Xbox One and September 20th for Nintendo Switch with cross-play multiplayer between the last two consoles.

Hover is a fast-paced, colourful and vibrant game. It looks good on the smaller screen of the Switch. I can understand why the developer I spoke to stated that it is the definitive edition of the game. While I only had a limited time with the game, what I saw certainly caught my eye. There is a bit of a learning curve, but it’s important to know that it’s fun. Now I’ve decided to buy a Switch, this will be a game I buy when it’s released on the 18th of September.
