The Harry Potter game Hogwarts Legacy is out now via the Deluxe Edition, and the game is soaring on Twitch and Steam before its official launch date on February 10. The game has received glowing reviews from some critics and is also generating a lot of discussion and controversy related to author J.K. Rowling and her comments about the trans community.
On Steam, Hogwarts Legacy reached more than 487,000 players to surpass Fallout 4, which reached a peak of 472,962 players. It has now reached the second highest peak concurrent player record for a paid single-player game, only behind Cyberpunk 2077. These numbers come from Benji-Sales on Twitter.

On Twitch, Hogwarts Legacy reached 1.2 million peak concurrent viewers, surpassing the record for a single-player game set by Elden Ring in 2022 (907,813 viewers). You can see more data points about Hogwarts Legacy's Twitch streaming numbers at Gamesight.
The game's Twitch numbers might be juiced up due, in part, to how Hogwarts Legacy has a number of Twitch Drops.
Hogwarts Legacy continues to be outperformed on Twitch and Steam by a number of multiplayer games, however. Elden Ring, for example, is primarily a single-player game but has multiplayer. But other games, like CS: GO and PUBG, have put up higher Steam and Twitch numbers than Hogwarts Legacy.
Concerning the controversy over Hogwarts Legacy, one outlet, GamesHub, posted an editorial about Rowling and her comments instead of a review. A number of popular streamers, including Hasan Piker, are streaming the game with some disclaimers. Piker said it's "fruitless" to try to boycott Hogwarts Legacy.
Hogwarts Legacy releases for everyone on Friday, February 10, across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The game comes to PS4 and Xbox One in April, while the Nintendo Switch edition is set for release in July 2023. Fans have been waiting a long time for Hogwarts Legacy, as it was originally slated to arrive in 2021 before being shifted to 2022 and then again to 2023.
Players begin their magical career as a fifth-year student coming to Hogwarts in the 1890s. In addition to exploring the castle and learning spells, players will venture beyond the castle walls.
Hogwarts Legacy is developed by Avalanche Software, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. The game has been embroiled in controversy due to transphobic remarks from Harry Potter author JK Rowling. Although she is not personally involved with its development, she stands to profit from its success. For more, read our in-depth article on how Rowling's comments have impacted the trans community.
