Heroes of the Storm Production Director notes league is not yet being worked on-January 2024

This article was originally published on GameSpot's sister site onGamers.com, which was dedicated to esports coverage.

Following a video interview that Heroes of the Storm Production Director Chris Sigaty completed with onGamers staffer Travis Gafford, Managing Editor Cody 'evoli' Conners was able to ask questions specific to their esports aspirations with their "hero brawler" title.

Sigaty noted that a developer ran Heroes of the Storm league is not currently being worked on, and explained what he thought about Blizzard's design philosophies.

Do you guys plan on doing a developer ran league? Esports has been a theme that has appeared a lot every time that Heroes is mentioned.

  Chris Sigaty

  Mhm.

  onGamers

Does it make sense to maybe run a WCS for Heroes?

  Chris Sigaty

So we're not committing to that, yet. Again, I think we have to see how it develops out. We definitely have the resources. We have a dedicated esports team in Blizzard. Its starting to think about Hearthstone, its starting to think about if we're even doing the right things by World of Warcraft, um, definitely continuing to iterate on WCS. Interestingly enough esports just recently moved under Team One. So esports is now part of the infrastructure where before it sat separately. There are a lot of discussions going on in our team about how this should play out, and we are not talking about what it would look like or anything with Heroes of the Storm yet, but we have the facilities to do that when we see the community really rise up and say we want it there.

One of the motifs, whether intentional or not, that seems to have appeared a lot in the panels with all of your titles is that, maybe, you're focusing on more casual gaming. I felt like that was, sort of, a design philosophy we've seen with Hearthstone. It's very easy to play a Hearthstone game. You got ten minutes, you know, and it's done and it's awesome. That's one of the things that my friends have always doubled back with and said was great. Sometimes you don't have forty minutes to play a Dota game. With every play through we've done with Heroes it seems to play a little faster. Is this a deliberate design philosophy across all games?

  Chris Sigaty

It's not. It's definitely not. It's not a design philosophy at Blizzard, as much at is something that challenges us all the time. If you look at Hearthstone, it's not a -- it's deceptively simple. You go in, it's easy, you've got the little talk through. When you actually land on it there's a lot more depth there than I think it's given credit for. It's easy for people to judge on the surface that it won't have that depth. We're definitely, our goal, with Heroes of the Storm is to have that depth. That keeps people playing. That's what gets you to that really high level competitive play. We want you to get in there and not be, you know -- StarCraft II is challenged by this. It really is, and if we can allow that ease of access, that ease of getting in, that ultimately lands in that depth then we've really done the right thing. We're certainly thinking about that for Heroes of the Storm. Hearthstone it was definitely a goal. It's not a Blizzard goal. Each game has it's own set of goals. That's what we want, an ability to ease your way in, and then land on something that is ultimately strategically deep.
