DC's The Suicide Squad opened in the US this past Friday, following its debut internationally, and the movie pulled in $26.5 million across 4,002 screens in North America. The $4.1 million that The Suicide Squad made for its opening day set a new record for an R-rated film during the pandemic.
The $26.5 million for its first three days in the US is below expectations of $30 million or more, but this is no surprise. After all, the Delta variant of COVID-19 is seen by some to be a growing concern, which might have inspired people to stay home. The film, like all of WB's 2021 movies, is also available on HBO Max. "An opening weekend below $30 million isn't surprising, given the ongoing pandemic, but it's disappointing because The Suicide Squad cost $185 million to produce and many millions more to promote globally," Variety reported.
