Havok, the Ireland-based provider of special effects middleware to game developers, has announced the release of the latest version of its physics software, dubbed Havok 4.0. Two new products--Havok Behavior and Havok FX--are part of the release.
Developers can take advantage of Havok's new physics technology on the PlayStation 3, the Xbox 360, and the 64-bit version of Windows, the company said, and the first Havok 4.0 games will be released this fall and winter. Dozens of PC and 360 games already feature Havok technology, including F.E.A.R. and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
Last October, Havok told GameSpot that it was concentrating on physics systems that are powered by a video card's graphics processing unit, or GPU, not a separate physics-only card.
"[T]hat's some of the advantage of taking a GPU approach to our software development," Jeff Yates, Havok's vice president of product management, said. "We can simply give game developers more options to explore the native power of various game systems."
