Early last month, Harmonix filed a trademark for VidRhythm with the United States Patent and Trademark Office but said nothing about it. Now, the Camrbridge, Massachusetts-based developer is officially sharing details on the project, confirming today that it is an iOS project. Harmonix is going mobile with VidRhythm.
Harmonix cofounder and CEO Alex Rogopulos recently told industry site Gamasutra that the studio has had its hand in a couple of iOS titles, but VidRhythm is the first wholly internally developed project for Apple's portable devices.
"It will actually be our first iOS release as a studio, coming out relatively soon," he told the website. "I can't say anything yet about what it is, but in parallel with all these huge console game productions we have under way, we're commencing our first iOS development project."
Unlike Nintendo, which has stoutly stated that it will not bring Mario to smartphones, Harmonix told Gamasutra that developing VidRhythm represents just the beginning of what the studio hopes to accomplish in that space.
"We think there are a lot of creative opportunities [with smartphones] that we haven't really been able to focus on yet. So we're looking forward to doing more in that space," he said.
Although there won't be a new Guitar Hero game or Rock Band 4 in 2011, Harmonix believes the music-game business remains viable if approached in the correct manner.
"We at Harmonix are working on [new music game experiences], both large and small, and other people are as well," he said. "I think the basic point here is that music is a profound part of who we are."
[UPDATE]: Harmonix director of communications and brand management John Drake told GameSpot that VidRhythm is not a game "per se," but that "it will, however, be funky."
In addition to VidRhythm, Harmonix is also at work on Dance Central 2, a Kinect title due out this holiday season. For more on that title, check out GameSpot's latest preview.
