Half-Life 3 Would Have Ended Without Resolution, Main Writer Says-October 2024
Oct 19, 2024 1:36 PM

Half-Life 3 remains as one of the strongest desires in the industry despite the fact that the objective conditions indicate that the chances of the title arriving is very small or, in certain cases, null.

Recently Chet Faliszek, writer linked to the last episodes of the series, left Valve and this represented a blow to the fans who still want to believe that the third game will come one day. However, at a given moment there were ideas for the title to exist and Marc Laidlaw revealed the plan he had for Half-Life 3 or Half-Life 2: Episode Three.

In a recent interview by Arcade Attack, Marc Laidlaw, lead writer of the Half-Life series revealed his ideas about a new installment of the series that for various reasons, never came.

The writer of the series, who left Valve in 2016, mentioned that although it had not been defined whether the next title in the series would be Half-Life 3 or Half-Life 2: Episode Three, there was a clear idea about it. The title would not be the end of the series and would leave the fans in suspense. In that sense, the creative stated the following.

I have no interest in going back. I had ideas for Episode 3. They were all supposed to take the series to a point where I could step away from it and leave it to the next generation. I had hoped for a reset between HL2 and HL3 that was as dramatic as the shift between HL1 and HL2. I honestly don’t know if anyone else shared this goal, but it seemed important to me to give ultimate freedom to whoever inherited the series, with my own personal set of loose ends tied up to my satisfaction. Unfortunately, I was not able to do that. But I never thought as far ahead as HL3, unless you were to say that HL3 and Episode 3 were the same thing.

Laidlaw later stated that his intention in thinking about the next title in the series was not to reach a conclusion, so rumors that said that title, which never came, would be the end of Gordon Freeman and the series are wrong.

I will say that I expected every installment would end without resolution, forever and ever…there was some rumor going around that Ep3 or HL3 would end Gordon Freeman’s story, and I don’t think that was accurate. My intention was that Ep3 would simply tie up the plot threads that were particular to HL2. But it would still end like HL1 and HL2, with Gordon in an indeterminate space, on hold, waiting for the next game to begin. So one cliffhanger after another.

Do you think we will ever see Half-Life 3? Let us know in the comments below. Interestingly, Valve recently released a new patch for the original Half-Life.
