Gwent: The Witcher Card Game, the free to play card game currently in development by CD Projekt Red, is a dream come true for all fans of the mini-game introduced in The Witcher 3. For the stand-alone title, CDPR is expanding the whole Gwent concept by introducing new mechanics and changes, as well as a single player campaign that will expand the series' universe. Unfortunately, free to play game always come with some mechanics which don't sit well with most, but it seems like CDPR wants to keep things as balanced and fair as possible.
In a new interview with PC Gamer, Gwent: The Witcher Card Game lead designer Damien Monnier, it's been revealed that the team doesn't want to give any sort of advantage to those who spend real money, with the game not telling players to spend it at any point.
“At the same time, we don’t want these guys necessarily get an advantage over people that don’t want to spend money, and also we don’t want people to grind to be able to get card packs. And that’s something I’m not going to tell you about yet because we want to see people’s reaction, but we’ve worked on this system that we think has cracked it, where you can still totally be competitive without having to spend money, and the goal for us is that if you feel that you want to spend some money, go ahead, but at no point will the game tell you this is it, you hit a wall, you must spend money.”
Damien Monnier has also touched on how spending real money will work in Gwent: The Witcher Card Game. Apparently, players will be able to choose one between three cards that are rare and above when purchasing a card pack, with the other four cards being random cards.
"We say okay, if you want to spend money, that’s fine, but we want to do more than just here’s five random cards. We want to say here’s four random and here’s one you can pick.”
As already mentioned, the Gwent: The Witcher Card Game is going to feature a single player component that will expand the series' universe. Narrative designer Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz also confirmed that the creator of the Bloody Baron quest of The Witcher 3 is also working on the campaign.
Gwent: The Witcher Card Game launches this September on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
