Guardians Of The Galaxy Director James Gunn's Upcoming Horror Movie Delayed-October 2024
Oct 26, 2024 8:35 AM

Guardians of the Galaxy franchise director James Gunn's new horror movie, BrightBurn, has been delayed by around six months. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film is now scheduled to launch on May 24, 2019, which is the start of the Memorial Day weekend in the United States. Previously, the film was pegged to premiere on November 30 this year. [Update: A new report suggests Gunn is in talks to write and possibly direct Suicide Squad 2.]

The Memorial Day weekend in the US is one of the most sought-after release windows of the year because schools and workplaces are off for the long weekend. The move seems to suggest that Sony, which is distributing BrightBurn, has a high degree of confidence in the film.

Now Playing: The Biggest Movies Left To Watch In 2018

BrightBurn will open amid competition from Disney's live-action Aladdin and the Matt Damon/Christian Bale movie Stuber. The Minecraft movie from Warner Bros. was also expected to premiere Memorial Day weekend 2019, but it has since been delayed.

Gunn originally planned to begin talking about BrightBurn during a major presentation at San Diego Comic-Con in July. However, the panel was canceled after Disney fired Gunn in the wake of controversial tweets of his that surfaced.

Gunn is producing BrightBurn, with The Hive's David Yarovesky set to direct. The movie features Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games), David Denman (Logan Lucky), and Matt Jones (Breaking Bad), though there are no plot details available yet.

As for the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, Disney is now reportedly looking for a new director for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The film's production has been paused as the search continues.
