Gremlins: Secrets Of The Mogwai Renewed For Second Season, Will Add Fourth Rule To Mogwai Lore-November 2024
Nov 6, 2024 8:38 PM

With the recent casting news for HBO Max's Gremlins: Secrets Of The Mogwai, more details about the upcoming animated show have been revealed--including the fact it's already been renewed for a second season. This news also includes adding a new rule to the creature's lore, which we will learn about when the series airs.

During the WarnerMedia Kids & Family upfronts president of WarnerMedia global kids, young adults and classics division Tom Ascheim announced that the upcoming Gizmo origin series will be getting a second season, even before the first season airs. Specific release dates for either season were not revealed.

Additionally, the lore of the Mogwai will be expanded upon during Season 1. Everyone knows the three rules for Mogwai: don't expose them to bright light, don't get them wet, and don't feed them after midnight. However, during the WarnerMedia Kids & Family upfronts, showrunner Tze Chun explained that they will be expanding on this mythology to add a fourth rule for the mysterious creatures. Sadly, we won't learn what this rule is until the show debuts on the streaming service.

However, we did learn a little more about the upcoming series. The show follows the owner of Gizmo in the original movie Gremlins, as a kid. "Our show takes place in 1920s China," Chun explained. "We really wanted to be authentic to that time period. And we have an incredible team of artists and cultural advisors who really built this world and made that happen. It starts in Shanghai, and it follows that old Mr. Wing, when he was just a 10-year-old boy named Sam. He meets Gizmo and he also meets a French street thief named Elle, and the three of them go on a journey through China to return Gizmo to his ancestral home. The Valley of Jade."

Izaac Wang (Good Boys) will be voicing Sam and Gabrielle Nevaeh Green (All That) will play his friend Elle. BD Wong and Ming-Na Wen will play Sam's parents. Voicing Sam's grandfather is none other than legendary actor James Hong (Big Trouble in Little China, Kung-Fu Panda). And of course, Gizmo will be voiced by A.J. LoCascio (The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special).

"One of the fun things about going back to the beginning of this friendship is that we get to see the origin story of the Mogwai," said Chun.

Additionally, the series will be authentic and be representative of the people on the show. "Even though it's a fantastical story, it's still really important to be as authentic to the characters, and having them being voiced by Asian actors," Wen explained. "I think it just lends itself to its authenticity."

As of this writing, the series will land in 2021, but there is no set release date for the HBO Max original.
