A new show based on the classic '70s musical Grease has been in been in works for a while and was confirmed as one of the upcoming titles for HBO Max when the service launched earlier this year. However, it's now been reported that the series is moving to CBSViacom's upcoming streaming platform Paramount+.
According to Variety, the series is now named Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies and will focus on the all-girl gang of the title. The show was announced by HBOMax in October last year with the title Grease: Rydell High. However, Variety's sources reveal that the company decided not to take the show into production after a change in management, with Casey Bloys taking over as Chief Content Officer for both HBO and HBO Max.
Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies will now be produced for Paramount+, which was announced last month. The show's creator and writer Annabel Oakes remains on board. The series will reveal how the Pink Ladies (Sandy, Rizzo, Jan, Marty, and Frenchy) formed and will show how the "reverence, fear, and moral panic they sparked changed Rydell High forever." The series will feature new songs, alongside those made famous by John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John in the movie.
The Grease spin-off is one of several original shows in development for Paramount+. Other series include a reboot of the comedy The Game, a CIA drama from Sicario writer Taylor Sheridan titled Lioness, and The Offer, a 10-part limited series about the production of the classic movie The Godfather. The platform will bring together existing content from CBS All Access with shows from Paramount's vault, such as those produced by BET, CBS, Comedy Central, MTV, and Nickelodeon.
CBS All Access is currently the TV home of Star Trek, with shows such as Star Trek Discovery, Picard, and Lower Depths. Other high-profile CBS All Access series include the reboot of The Twilight Zone and the upcoming adaptation of Stephen King's The Stand.
