Godzilla Vs. Kong Sets New Pandemic Box Office Record With US Release Still To Come-September 2024
Sep 22, 2024 8:22 PM

Godzilla vs. Kong is off to a great start at the box office, albeit great for these pandemic times we're living in. The monster movie opened in foreign markets last weekend, and it's made $121.8 million so far, which sets a new record for highest foreign box office over its first weekend in the pandemic.

It smashed the previous record-holder, Christopher Nolan's Tenet, which made $53 million over its opening frame from international markets.

In China alone, Godzilla vs. Kong brought in $70.3 million at the box office. The film also performed well in Australia, Mexico, and Russia, according to The Hollywood Reporter. In fact, even with the pandemic factored in, Godzilla vs. Kong is doing similar foreign box office numbers to Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which are set in the same universe.

Godzilla vs. Kong comes to the US on Wednesday, March 31, and it enters a market that is re-opening following closures related to the pandemic. Movie theaters in major markets like New York and LA are now open, along with a number of other cities.

Godzilla vs. Kong will grow again when it launches in Godzilla's home country, Japan, in May.

Godzilla vs. Kong stars Millie Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler, Demian Bichir, Alexander Skarsgard, and Rebecca Hall. It is a sequel of sorts to Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Kong: Skull Island. As its name suggests, the film follows the story of Godzilla and Kong and their ultimate battle.
