American movie studios tried to make Godzilla as epic as he is in Japan, but after the abysmal 1998 Roland Emmerich would-be franchise starter was nuked in the water, it seemed like they'd never get another shot. However, Legendary's 2014 Godzilla broke that longstanding curse and spawned its Monsterverse, which will continue with the Apple TV+ series, Legacy of Monsters.
The 10-episode series premieres worldwide exclusively on Apple TV+ on November 17, with two episodes, followed by one episode every Friday through January 12. The series stars the father-son duo of Kurt and Wyatt Russell, who play the same character at different ages. Anna Sawai, Mari Yamamoto, Anders Holm, Kiersey Clemons, Ren Watabe, Joe Tippett, and Elisa Lasowski co-star. The trailer also features John Goodman making a cameo appearance, reprising his role as Bill Randa from 2017's Kong: Skull Island. Check it out below.
"Legacy" will follow the continuing story that originated with Godzilla, that threaded through Skull Island, Godzilla: King of Monsters, and Godzilla vs. Kong. When this series ends, it will keep going into Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which is slated for release on April 12 of next year, after an initial March release was pushed back a month. The series will explore the origins of the mysterious monster-hunting organization Monarch through the decades. In addition to familiar faves, eagle-eye fans might notice some new additions to the Monsterverse including Kumonga, the giant spider.
Godzilla rights holder Toho also has its own new Godzilla movie arriving this December, Godzilla Minus One, which takes place in postwar Japan. It has no direct relation to the critically acclaimed Shin Godzilla from 2016.
