God of War Ragnarok Costed $200m to Make; Almost 5x the Amount of God of War III-October 2024

PlayStation 5 is home to some of gaming’s biggest upcoming releases, including Final Fantasy XVI, to name an example. Of the games out on the console, God of War Ragnarok stands above many of them as a blockbuster hit for PS5, and its success can be attributed to its marketing and post-launch support. Earlier today, though, it was revealed how much the game cost Sony. The amount of money invested in this game might surprise some of our avid readers.

In a report made by The Guardian, Shuhei Yoshida was interviewed, and it included various quotes about his experiences within the industry, including working on 2012’s Journey to the projects of today. In that interview, God of War Ragnarok was brought up, with the development cost being reported to be $200 million. You can view that specific section in the following Tweet below.

God of War: Ragnarok reportedly cost around $200m to make.

This is almost 5x the amount of God of War III, which cost around $44m to make when it launched in 2010. https://t.co/6qIoBjycXY pic.twitter.com/9LWeZBtFNY

The highlighted section above also points out a comparison to God of War III, which was canonically the final game in the series until about 2018. That title burned through about $44 million of Sony’s funds. Compared to God of War Ragnarok last year, that’s an increase of nearly 500%.

Yoshida also spoke on funding games shortly after that revelation, saying,

Getting games funded is tough, but even when you make an amazing game, there are so many out there in the market, great games that nobody knows. The good thing is, these days, there are really good high-quality indie publishers out there.

When I was in São Paolo last year, there were scouts from Devolver, Curve Digital, Team17, all trying to find the talent from these places, the games that only they can make - [a game’s] cultural background, mythology, artwork, music, can all be something special to stand out in the market… It’s all about economy. Some big games sell tens of millions of units and justify putting all these resources into expensive regions, but I think the industry has to diversify, and I think that will happen naturally and organically.

It’s an interesting point of view, no doubt. And considering how much of a visual spectacle some of the biggest PlayStation games wind up becoming, it begs the question: how much of a bigger budget poured into a single game will we see from Sony? We’ll continue to update as more information on God of War: Ragnarok, including updates, DLC, and more, as it’s released. God of War: Ragnarok is available exclusively on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.
