Gigabyte's Next Step in DDR Motherboards
Gigabyte's Next Step in DDR Motherboards-October 2024
Oct 22, 2024 9:35 PM

Gigabyte, the first company to produce motherboards with AMD's new 761 chipset, has announced a new upgrade option that integrates IDE RAID for faster hard drive performance. The new GA-7DXR motherboard is hitting the PC upgrade market just as double-data rate (DDR) memory is actually becoming available to end users. The new type of system memory, which runs at 200MHz or 266MHz instead of the current 133MHz, was only initially available in the systems that started trickling out from Micron and other makers in November 2000.

RAID controllers that work with cheaper IDE drives have become increasingly common in the last year, and Abit's KT7-RAID motherboard - which similarly integrates an IDE RAID controller into a standard Athlon motherboard - has been a popular performance upgrade. RAID controllers allow users to link two or more similar hard drives for increased performance or data security, an option that's long been available with much more expensive SCSI drives.
