The basic Sony PSP package has everything you need to start gaming, namely the PSP unit and an AC adapter to keep the unit fully charged. However, you might want to pick up a few choice accessories if you want to get the most out of your PSP system. The value pack includes several add-ins, like a 32MB memory stick, headphones, and a case, but, as with everything else in life, the best accessories are the ones you have to buy separately.

We've put together a short list of accessories that can help make your PSP safer and more powerful--everything from new memory sticks to Internet sharing devices. Sony also plans on shipping new accessories to expand the PSP's abilities even more. The PSP-300 video camera for voice and video over IP and the PSP-290 GPS receiver should both arrive in Japan this October.

SanDisk 4GB Memory Stick Pro Duo

The 32MB memory stick included with the basic PSP package is fine for holding a couple of songs, but you'll need to upgrade to a larger memory stick if you plan on using the PSP to watch movies. The extra storage will also come in handy when Sony launches its PSP emulator, allowing players to download and play PlayStation games from the memory stick. SanDisk's candy-red 4GB monster will arrive this June and joins the existing 2GB, 1GB, 512MB, and 256MB cards to complete the gaming line.

SanDisk 1GB RapidGX Memory Stick Pro Duo

Storage capacity is important for the PSP, but how quickly you can move data to and from the portable can be just as important. Check out the SanDisk RapidGX Memory Stick Pro Duo if you can't afford to wait for movies and music to transfer when you need to rush out the door. The package includes SanDisk's MicroMate high-speed card reader, which will make the RapidGX up to "three times faster than those of a standard Memory Stick Pro Duo card," according to SanDisk officials. The first 1GB RapidGX cards will be available in July.

Thrustmaster WiFi USB Key for PSP

You'll need an Internet-connected Wi-Fi network for online multiplayer gaming and to get on the Web with the PSP's built-in browser. The Thrustmaster WiFi USB Key for PSP can plug into any Windows XP PC connected to the Internet and create a Wi-Fi hot spot that you can connect to with your PSP or other Wi-Fi-enabled devices such as laptops, PDAs, and, yes, even the Nintendo DS.

Sony LF-PK1 LocationFree Player Pak

The Sony LF-PK1 LocationFree Player Pak streams live TV to any PC or PSP with broadband access. It has built-in wireless, and it works with any video source, including DVRs and TiVos. It's not quite on par with the Slingbox, but it's the only device that streams video to your PSP--and it's getting better with each firmware upgrade.

Logitech PlayGear Pocket PSP

Logitech knows that the first thing gamers don't want to do when they pick up their PSPs is drop and break it. The PlayGear Pocket PSP's protective polycarbonate case comes in a silver finish, and its lid swivels 270 degrees to block out the sun or become a makeshift stand to make movie viewing more accessible. Owners can also use the case to display personalized artwork. Logitech offers a separate PlayGear Pocket Skin Kit that includes 10 free skins and 30 blank templates that you can use to create your own designs.

Nyko Charger Grip for PSP

The Nyko Charger Grip improves upon PSP ergonomics by mimicking the PS2 controller's design, and its built-in rechargeable battery provides five hours of juice for your PSP. With only a couple of small downsides, the Nyko Charger Grip for PSP delivers exactly what it promises: a more ergonomic gaming experience on your PSP, and five extra hours of battery life.
