GameStop/Reddit Movie Is In The Works At James Bond Studio With Author Ben Mezrich; Elon Musk, Dave Portnoy May Appear-October 2024

As the GameStop/Reddit stock prime drama was unfolding, many on social media remarked that it would be excellent fodder for a feature film. Well, now that's officially happening.

Author Ben Mezrich, who wrote the books that got turned into The Social Network and 21, has sold his idea for a book about the GameStop/Reddit situation to MGM after a bidding war. In his trademark humor, Mezrich celebrated the sale with some silly tweets, which you can see below.

Mezrich also said he hopes Elon Musk and Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy, two prominent figures in the ongoing drama, will play themselves in the feature film.

I’m putting all your tweets in the movie.

  First.

According to Deadline's report, James Bond studio MGM won the rights to Mezrich's book proposal, The Antisocial Network, which follows the story of "amateur investors, gamers, and internet trolls who brought Wall Street to its knees."

This is still an ongoing story, of course, and the book isn't written yet, but Mezrich and his team are said to have begun shopping the idea at the end of last week. On Friday night, MGM made a deal to acquire the rights to the book, the report said. It's also worth noting that it is not uncommon for a movie studio to buy the rights to an idea for a book before it is written.

Mezrich is a prolific author who has penned more than 20 novels. Arguably his most famous work is The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding Of Facebook, a Tale Of Sex, Money, Genius, and Betrayal that was adapted into the Oscar-winning movie The Social Network. He also wrote Bringing Down The House: The Inside Story of Six M.I.T. Students Who Took Vegas For Millions, which was adapted into the Kevin Spacey movie 21.

It's expected to be another volatile week for the US stock market. Some believe GameStop's stock price will climb higher--to the moon, as they say--while others are projecting a decline back to normalcy. Only time will tell.
