Game of Thrones Movie Not Happening, Author George RR Martin Confirms-December 2024
Dec 21, 2024 2:12 AM

Despite reports to the contrary, there is no Game of Thrones movie in works, the creator of the hugely popular fantasy saga has confirmed.

Yesterday, reports surfaced that quoted author George RR Martin as saying that "there will be a movie." Martin supposedly made these comments while at a party following the show's massive Emmy win last week. He added that, although he would not have time to be involved, it was "something that HBO and DB [Weiss] and David [Benioff] are dealing with," referring the programme's showrunners.

Now Martin has clarified this issue on his Livejournal blog, stating that this was simply not the case. His entry reads:

Don't believe everything you read, boys and girls. Especially not online.

I don't know where this latest round of "there's going to be a GAME OF THRONES movie" nonsense is coming from, but suddenly it is everywhere, and all of us connected with the show and HBO are being bombarded. But nothing has changed.

The idea is still powerfully attractive. Not just to me, but to many people connected with the show. Actors, directors, producers, writers. How not? It would be a great way to end.

Which doesn't mean it is going to happen. There is great enthusiasm for the notion, sure, but not necessarily from HBO. They are in the TV business, not the feature film business."

Previously, Weiss and Benioff had stated that they planned to finish the show after seven seasons. Last year, Entertainment Weekly quoted Benioff as saying: "I would say it's the goal we've had from the beginning. Once we got to the point where we felt like we're going to be able to tell this tale to its conclusion, that became [an even clearer] goal. Seven gods, seven kingdoms, seven seasons. It feels right to us."

However, with ratings high and a record-breaking Emmy haul, it remains likely that HBO would look to extend the show beyond two more seasons--but whether this would be another season, a movie, or even a spinoff show remains unknown.

Game of Thrones season six is currently in production, and will premiere in 2016.
