Sony has found a director for its upcoming Mulan movie, based on the the Chinese legend of a young woman who surreptitiously takes her father's place in battle.

According to Deadline, Alex Graves has been brought on to direct the live-action film. Graves is a TV veteran, having directed episodes of Game of Thrones, Homeland, Shameless, The Newsroom, and Bloodline, among others.

Sony's Mulan movie is one of at least two currently in production. The other is a live-action reimagining of the 1998 animated classic Mulan from Disney. According to Deadline, Sony's Mulan movie is "being designed for the international marketplace, so it[s] pace won't necessarily be determined by progress on the Disney film." Sony's film is being written by Jason Keller (Escape Plan, Mirror Mirror).

As for the Disney Mulan movie, it is scheduled to land in theaters on November 2, 2018. Additionally, the lead role is expected to be played by a Chinese actress, with Disney kicking off a global casting search soon.

A number of Disney properties are getting turned into live-action movies. Maleficent, Cinderella, and The Jungle Book have already released, with Beauty and the Beast set for a March 2017 premiere. Other films in the works include Cruella, which stars Emma Stone and is based on 101 Dalmations; Tink, with Reese Witherspoon as Tinkerbell from Peter Pan; and the recently announced Lion King remake, which has Iron Man and The Jungle Book director Jon Favreau attached.
