Game of Thrones Bosses Apologize for This Week's Episode Starting a Trend-November 2024
Nov 21, 2024 8:34 AM

This week's episode of Game of Thrones was a particularly emotional one for fans. Showrunners DB Weiss and David Benioff are now apologizing for one aspect of it, though not likely for the reason you'd expect.

Spoilers for Season 6, Episode 5 follow below.

On the latest episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live, Weiss and Benioff took the opportunity to apologize to fans of Game of Thrones. This wasn't in response to any of the notable deaths that occurred in the final minutes of the episode, but rather because of a new trend that's likely to emerge from one of the episode's big reveals.

Through one of Bran's greenseer visions, we finally discover how Hodor became Hodor. The name/word comes from a shortening of the the instructions Hodor is given during the final moments of his life. The exact mechanics for how this happens are a touch unclear, but the overall point is Hodor is essentially short for "hold the door," and you can bet people are going to start saying "Hodor" instead of that.

Weiss and Benioff, then, are apologizing for a creating a new "I'm Rick James"-esque pop culture expression that's guaranteed to be run into the ground. You can see exactly what they had to say in the video below.
