All in all it was a fairly slow week for PC gaming news. In our continuing coverage of the suit against Origin and parent company Electronic Arts over Ultima Online, the latest fray in the legal situation puts EA on the offensive. EA's team of attorneys filed a motion to remove the plaintiff's lawyer, George Schultz. In a win for Schultz, the motion was denied and Schultz is still on the case. So what's going on with the ongoing suit above and beyond all the legal wrangling? Jeez, any lawyers in the house?
One of the spookiest and insanely popular game titles for the PlayStation, Capcom's Resident Evil 2, is coming to the PC. The title places gamers in a city where its inhabitants have become zombies, and it's your job to take the zombies out. With over four million copies sold on the PlayStation, the game may have a future on the PC. Of course, it will look better than the PlayStation's tired graphics with support for 3Dfx, Rendition, PowerVR, and others. Due to hit hard drives in February 1999, gamers should be able to give their Valentine lover a hint and ask for it as a "loving" gift. Sure beats flowers, doesn't it?
Remember the days of Populous? While the focus of the new Populous has changed a little from its god game beginnings, the title has more of a strategy feel as you worship a series of different towers for spells, abilities, and the knowledge to lead your civilization into its golden years.
Requiem: Avenging Angel, the upcoming action/shooter from 3DO, is still in development. Its developer, Cyclone Studios, has announced that it will license its engine.
Sounds like a familiar scenario, eh? Half-Life uses the Quake II engine, and it seems like everyone is licensing the Unreal or Shogo engine. Will the Requiem engine stand up to the competition? During a demo at E3, we took an early look at the game, and it looked really promising.
Sick of playing all the levels in Age of Empires and all you want for Christmas is AOE2? Well, you won't be seeing AOE2 under the evergreen tree this year, but Microsoft and Ensemble Studios announced that the Age of Empires: Rise of Rome expansion pack will be shipped in time to play over a glass of eggnog and a bunch of stale cookies. Bruce Shelley from Ensemble was nice enough to stop by the offices to hand us a few gold copies of the pack, sit down, and talk about what the company wants to do with the title (and he gave us some tidbits about AOE2).
Railroad Tycoon II is set to pull out of the station in November according to the Gathering of Developers. New features added to the choo-choo chugger include Jesse James robbing your trains, and you'll be able to battle in the business world with historical tycoons like Cornelius Vanderbilt and German leader Otto Von Bismark.
