Game Developer Magazine closing-October 2024
Oct 18, 2024 10:20 PM

The Game Developer Magazine will soon be no more. After 19 years, the magazine will publish its final issue in July, parent company UBM Tech announced today. In addition, the magazine will cease distribution of digital issues, though some features will live on at a special portal on sister website Gamasutra.

Existing paid subscribers (digital or physical) will be contacted in the next few days and provided with options for refunds or a fulfillment of their subscription with an alternative product.

"We've made the decision to shift away from print as part of a wider strategy change in our parent company UBM Tech, which is simultaneously shifting other print publications either to digital only or to website-specific content, orienting them to help support our growing community-centric events such as Game Developers Conference," the company said in a statement.

Though the magazine may be going away, its major research features, like the recently published Salary Survey, will continue. This research will be conducted and published by Gamasutra editors.

It is not clear if Game Developer Magazine staffers were assigned to different positions within UBM Tech or laid off outright, though contributor Brandon Sheffield wrote on Twitter that he was part of the cuts. In addition, the transition has impacted Gamasutra, as news editor Frank Cifaldi tweeted today he is longer employed at the trade site.

When it closes this summer, the Game Developer Magazine will join the likes of GamePro, PSM3, Xbox World, PlayStation: The Official Magazine, and Nintendo Power as print publications to cease publication.
