Game Boy Gives Nintendo Boost
Game Boy Gives Nintendo Boost-October 2024
Oct 17, 2024 8:38 PM

Wednesday in Japan, Nintendo Co. Ltd. said that sales for the first six months of the year would be higher than its earlier estimate of 180 billion yen. The company attributed this to solid sales of the Game Boy, which continue to be strong in Japan. The popularity of the Pocket Monster game in Japan has buoyed Nintendo's black and white portable when, in terms of the historical life span of game systems, it should be all but dead.

Nintendo 64 sales in the US continue to be strong, however, in Japan, they remain lackluster. That is turning, as third-party publishers are announcing more support for the machine, but it will be interesting to see if Nintendo is able to deliver its promised 64DD system next year, along with one of the most anticipated games in Japan, Mother 3.

Barring any unforeseen delays, Nintendo's current lineup for the first half of 1998 in the US looks strong, with Yoshi's Story, Banjo-Kazooie, Conker's Quest, Zelda 64, and F-Zero 64 set for release within the first few months of the year.
