Atari Games Corporation has been awarded the Japanese patent for force feedback steering technology, effective November 6, 1998, the company announced. The patent, which covers technology that delivers the now-common force feedback effects through racing game steering wheels, will remain in effect through January 10, 2010. Atari filed for the Japanese patent back in January of 1990 and was actually granted the US patent to the technology in 1991.
Atari has entered into a patent cross-license agreement with Sega Enterprises that gives Sega a worldwide non-exclusive license to Atari's force feedback steering technology for use in Sega arcade games and home video game systems. Sega has given Atari a non-exclusive worldwide license to its "viewpoint changeover" technology," which allows a video game player to choose from a multiple number of pre-set points of view.
Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
