First-Person Superhero Sim Megaton Rainfall Due for Release on September 26-September 2024

Do you remember Megaton Rainfall? It's a one-man project by Alfonso del Cerro (whom we interviewed a while back) who set out to develop a unique game. Megaton Rainfall is a first-person superhero sim where you play as an indestructible superbeing capable of flying at supersonic speed.

Needless to say, you will be fighting off an alien invasion on Earth. The major twist is that while your character is indestructible, the cities aren't and if you're not careful you can damage them as much as the aliens with your powers. Cities will have a health bar and if they are destroyed, it's game over. Also, there will be online leaderboards based on playtime and human casualties (the fewer the better, of course).

The scale is almost unprecedented for games. The entire Earth has been recreated procedurally, with cities up to 200 square miles that you'll be able to cross at Mach 8 speed in mere seconds.

Megaton Rainfall has been confirmed earlier this week to be set for launch on September 26th for PlayStation 4 (with full PlayStation VR support: the entire game can be played in VR mode). On PS4 Pro, the game will be rendered at 4K resolution via checkerboard rendering and 60 frames per second.

The game is also coming to PC via Steam at a later date, but Sony provided additional support to the developer in exchange for a temporary exclusivity agreement. Given the relative drought of superhero based games, Megaton Rainfall certainly seems worth keeping an eye on.
