Crash Team Racing, South Park Rally, Speed Freaks, Chocobo Racing, and others - it seems as though the Mario Kart-style racing genre is booming. It's peculiar that it's taken so long for these 'copycat' games to come out, as the first of the latest generation of cart games, Mario Kart, released more than two and a half years ago. Whatever the reason for all these titles coming out now, they all seem worthy of some play time. Hopefully, the same will be true of Interplay's foray into the genre with Renegade Racers. Slated for release in the first quarter of 2000 on the PlayStation and Dreamcast, Renegade Racers looks like it's coming along well.
The premise is simple: Buck Billionaire sends a message to all the renegades around the world to participate in his Renegade Racing adventure. Everyone responds and wants to prove their skill - however, of the thousands who reply, he only chooses 12. These 12, each with his own custom speedboat, compete on 48 different tracks filled with obstacles, power-ups, and weapons.
We'll be posting full previews of both the Dreamcast and PlayStation versions of Renegade Racers in the near future. For now though, browse through first screens of the PlayStation version in action.
