Finding Dory Passes Captain America: Civil War to Become Biggest US Movie of 2016-November 2024

After another weekend at the box office, Pixar's animated hit Finding Dory has now passed fellow Disney film Captain America: Civil War to become the biggest US film of 2016.

Finding Dory (June) has now pulled in around $423 million since its US opening in June, compared to $406.2 million for Civil War (May). According to Entertainment Weekly, Finding Dory is now one of only 24 films ever to reach $400 million domestically.

Globally, Finding Dory has now banked around $643 million. It's also worth noting that the film has not yet debuted in big markets such as the UK, Italy, Germany, Japan, and Mexico.

Finding Dory is also closing in on Shrek 2's record for highest-grossing animated movie in US history; that movie made $441.2 million during its box office run in 2004.

Disney also announced that its movies have now collectively made $5 billion this year worldwide, which is a new record for any film studio ever. Disney movies also made $5 billion in 2015, but this figure was not reached until December 20, after the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Big-time Disney movies contributing to the $5 billion figure in 2016 have included Finding Dory, Civil War, The Jungle Book, and Zootopia. Looking ahead, the Star Wars spinoff Rogue One comes out in December.
