FFVII Opens To Stellar Weekend
FFVII Opens To Stellar Weekend-October 2024
Oct 16, 2024 11:26 PM

Surprising no one, Square's Final Fantasy VII has sold quite well in the US.

Sony Computer Entertainment America announced Tuesday that the game sold over 330,000 units in its debut weekend. Sony has likened the release to a movie opening, with FFVII grossing US$16.5 million (which was more than the highest grossing film over Labor Day weekend, G.I. Jane, which grossed US$11.1 million according to The Hollywood Reporter).

Andrew House, SCEA's vice president of marketing, said in a statement, "This weekend's sales will truly catapult Final Fantasy VII into video game history - consumers have selected Final Fantasy VII and PlayStation as their choice for entertainment."

However, it is interesting to note that enthusiasm for the US release hasn't come close to the frenzy shown for the game in Japan. There, the game sold 2.5 million copies in the first three days of release.

What Sony didn't state in its statement today was that the game has been available since September 2, substantially more than a single weekend's sales. In fact, if the game had been held until its official street date of September 7, the numbers would only be for one day, and likely wouldn't have reached near 330,000.
