While Far Cry games used to be known for their innovation and edgy storylines, it’s safe to say the series has fallen into a bit of a rut, with Far Cry 6 in particular feeling very by-the-book. Thankfully, it seems like series creators Ubisoft Toronto may be cooking up something more unique for Far Cry 7.
According to reliable Ubisoft insider Tom Henderson, Far Cry 7 will have a “non-linear” story campaign that players can tackle how they see fit. Apparently, the premise is that you’re the head of a wealthy family that has been kidnapped by a conspiracy cult known as the “‘Sons of Truth.” It’s up to you to save your family members and you can choose the order in which you track them down. Interestingly, there’s also said to be a time-limit element to the game, with players having to rescue their family within 72 in-game hours, which should equate to around 24 real-world hours. Depending on the choices you make some family members could actually die, which will change the game’s narrative.
Henderson also reports there will be a new “interrogation” mechanic in the game, which is sure to spark some controversy. That said, this won’t be a straightforward “torture somebody and they’ll give you your answer” type of thing – your target may lie, refuse to speak, or even escape your clutches.
Of course, take this all with a grain of salt until there's an official announcement, but Henderson has had the goods on Ubisoft many times in the past. Speaking of which, Henderson previously spoke about the future of Far Cry, saying there were two projects in the works – Far Cry 7 (Project Blackbird) and a Tarkov-style multiplayer game (Project Maverick). In that report, he hinted the game may take place in Alaska.
Interestingly, Henderson has also shot down another rumor that has been making the rounds, which stated that the next game in Ubisoft’s franchise would be called Far Cry: Rise and take place on an island near Korea. So yeah, you can probably cross that one off your bingo cards.
Far Cry 7 is said to be targeting a late 2025 release. What do yo think about this latest round of rumors? While it’s too early to get too excited, to me, this sounds like the kind of shakeup this series has been needing.
