A senior developer at Lionhead Studios has acknowledged that the studio has not done the best job conveying exactly what kind of game Fable Legends is. Game director David Eckelberry says in a new interview that telling people what it's all about has been difficult because the game is "incredibly different."
"We have a really hard time sometimes explaining what this game is," Eckelberry told Game Informer. "It's incredibly different. So many of our fans in closed beta or those who come up to us at shows like Gamescom and PAX East say, 'I didn't really know what this is. I've heard you guys talk about it, but I still don't know.' That's fair. We haven't done the best job at explaining what Legends is."
The Fable franchise has deviated from its core RPG roots in the past, with games like Fable: The Journey--a Kinect game--and the cel-shaded hack-and-slash title, Fable Heroes. Legends changes things up in that it's a free-to-play, online-focused game where teams of four compete against one player serving as the villain.
Lionhead has high hopes for Legends, as the developer thinks the game will enjoy up to a 10-year lifespan.
Due out later this year, Legends is coming to Xbox One and PC, featuring cross-play between the two versions. A release date has not been announced, nor do we know if both will launch on the same day. At Comic-Con, an October release date was revealed in an Xbox video, but the date was not accurate.
