F9's Epic Magnet Plane Stunt Was The Idea Of A 9-Year-Old, Director Confirms-November 2024

One of the ideas for a particularly extreme Fast 9 stunt came from the director's young child. Director Justin Lin told Empire that the idea to use magnets in the action film was actually his son Oqwe's idea, and it's something he came up with when he was 8 or 9. Before seeing the stunt yourself, make sure to check out GameSpot's Fast & Furious 9 review.

Lin recalled that he was in London for a week with his son for meetings for F9. To spend more time with his child, Lin took him to meetings, and this is where the idea spawned. Lin said one of the challenges he was facing at the time was how to film one particular set-piece involving a car flying through the air that needed to land safely on the other side of a chasm.

Oqwe had the idea for a "magnet plane," which is exactly what it sounds like. The plane has a magnet attached to it that's so strong it can catch a car out of the air.

"We were talking about the ravine [set-piece] and I said, 'Alright, so here's Roman and Tej. Jakob needs to get to the other side--how does he get there?' And Oqwe just picked it up and pitched the idea of the plane and everything," Lin said. "After us spending hundreds of hours on planning, I guess he was paying attention, and he understood the characters."

Lin directed Fast 3-6, and he is returning to the Fast & Furious series for F9. The film hits theaters in North America on June 25, but it opens in other parts of the world earlier.

The ninth film in the Fast & Furious saga, F9 follows Diesel's Dom Toretto as he lives off the grid with his family. Dom gets thrust back into danger when his brother Jakob (John Cena) comes to town and threatens his peace. The new film tells a globe-trotting story across places like London, Tokyo, America, Edinburgh, Tbilisi, and Azerbaijan.

In addition to Diesel and Cena, F9 stars Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, Jordana Brewster, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Sung Kang. Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren are also set to star in the movie, while Cardi B plays a new character named Leysa.
