Sony Online Entertainment has announced that its upcoming online role-playing game expansion, EverQuest: The Shadows of Luclin, will include an additional CD-ROM that will upgrade all the textures in the original world of Norrath and the previous expansions. EverQuest was first released in 1999 with low-resolution 32x32 textures. EverQuest: The Shadows of Luclin will feature 256x256 textures, with some as large as 512x512. The higher-resolution textures will make the game's online fantasy world look more detailed and lifelike. Sony also released new screenshots showing off some of the game's environments using the higher-resolution textures.
In addition to the new texture upgrade, Sony unveiled new high-level character customization options that will be included in the upcoming game expansion. Players with characters over level 50 who purchase and install EverQuest: The Shadows of Luclin will have access to new character options, such as minor permanent statistic and resistance boosts, unique class-based skills, and new general skills. Some enhancements may add a title to the character that will be visible to other players. In order to gain access to these customization options, players will have to switch to an alternative advancement experience pool, and players will have the option to switch between the alternative experience pool and the experience pool used for gaining new levels.
EverQuest: The Shadows of Luclin is in development at Verant, the studio that created the original game, and it is scheduled for release in November. For more information, take a look at our previous coverage of the expansion.
