Microtransactions seem to be a point of contention for gamers within online games. At times it can ruin balance, or even provide a play-to-win type of atmosphere and mentality. Destiny is also going to be getting its share of microtransactions. Though for emotes only at the moment.
But, to help you see the value (or not, depending) of the new currency and to increase interest, Bungie will be giving players enough of it so that you can have at least one emote of your very own. Bungie was very quick to point out that these emotes are completely optional and in no way, shape or form constitute real story content, and will never be required to access future content either.
The microtransactions in this particular case are an interesting bid for more support to help keep the Destiny servers operational. In fact, being completely optional and not having anything to do with boosting performance or character stats, it doesn't really affect the game. So perhaps this is an example of a microtransaction done right. Something completely non mandatory.
“Our plan is to use these new items to bolster the service provided by our live team for another full year, as they grow and create more robust and engaging events that we’ll announce later this year,”
