Responding to calls from the player community, EVE Online Icelandic developer CCP announces the return of PLEX for GOOD. The program allows players to donate to areas in the Philippines affected by Typhoon Haiyan.
PLEX is an in-game currency in EVE Online. For each unit of PLEX that a player donates to the character "CCP PLEX for GOOD," CCP will contribute $15 to the Icelandic Red Cross to fund their efforts in the Philippines. CCP is also encouraging players to participate by giving away a Sisters of EVE Food Relief T-shirt to anyone who donates a PLEX. CCP will accept donation until Dec. 7.
It should be noted PLEX is not the same as in-game currencies in other MMOs, like gold in World of Warcraft, for example. While PLEX can be earned by simply playing EVE Online, it can also be used to pay for subscription to the game and other content, so players are actually giving something up when they donate. That being said, PLEX for GOOD donations are not tax deductible.
CCP has also issued a warning about any scamming attempts surrounding PLEX for GOOD. It considers them "morally reprehensible" and will respond to them "with the harshest and swiftest action at [its] disposal."
$100,000 in previous PLEX for GOOD donations have gone towards victims of natural disasters in Haiti, Japan, and the United States. Overall the EVE Online community has raised more than $150,000 for charitable causes since it first started collecting, following the Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami.
