Wii owners in Europe will be able to add four more titles to their Virtual Console's virtual cupboard today, including the classic fighting game Virtua Fighter 2. Originally released in the arcades in 1994, and ported to the Sega Saturn, Sega Mega Drive, and PC, Virtua Fighter 2 has nine characters to master, with a range of different move combos to discover, and it can be played in one- or two-player modes.
Next up is Wonder Boy in Monster World, originally released in 1991 on the Sega Mega Drive. It's a cross between a platformer and a role-playing game. Players control Shion, a boy on a quest to save Monster World. Shion runs, jumps, and kills enemies in the game in a traditional platforming style, but gathers clues from townsfolk and can upgrade weapons and armour in an RPG vein.
Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle is a pure platform game originally released on the Sega Mega Drive in Japan in 1989. The game features 11 stages, as gamers take on the role of the titular Alex Kidd searching for his father, King Thor. The game features a rock-paper-scissors-style boss-fight system.
The final game this week is the TurboGrafx game Shockman, first released in 1991. The cooperative mode in this platformer features elements such as "shared life" and "team shockbeam" when two players hook up to battle the hordes of robotic adversaries. The game features the choice of multiple routes through its levels.
Virtua Fighter 2, Wonder Boy in Monster World, and Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle all cost 800 Wii points (approx £5.60), while Shockman weighs in at 600 (£4.20).
As of the end of March 2007, Nintendo said that approximately 3.3 million Virtual Console titles had been downloaded worldwide.
