The Summer promotion tournament will bring together the unfortunate last three finishers of the regular season along with the top three Challenger teams from Europe. It is no secret that the continent packs quite the punch when it comes to amateur teams. Since the gradual and steady rise of the Challenger League, many skilled and well-rounded line-ups have seen the light of day and not one or two have proven that they have what it takes to break into the LCS.
The fight for survival will be fought by Copenhagen Wolves, Supa Hot Crew and Millenium. On the other hand, the opportunistic youngsters from Ninjas in Pyjamas, Cloud9 Eclipse and Denial eSports enter the battleground with only one goal in mind - a spot in the Summer season and a chance at the ultimate prize, The Season 4 World Championship.
A tough road ahead for the Wolves.
Last week's performance was mentally draining for the Wolves. They went 1-0 in both of their matches, only to then lose 1-2 to both Alliance and Gambit. This time, such a mistake will cost them a lot more. The line-up has had its fair share of good performances and is definitely the favourite. Now that all is on the line, the Wolves will definitely have to rise to the occasion as history has taught us never to underestimate a Polish team. In addition, their mental preparation has to also be on-par as not one or two teams have crumbled during a best-of-five. Should something go wrong, the Wolves must stay calm and continue playing their game. Hopefully, the recent conflicts will not affect the line-up as a loss of momentum could be devastating,
Player to watch: Konstantinos 'Forg1ven' Tzortzou
Notorious for his flaming and Twitter remarks, the Greek will have to showcase his class and silence the critics in this game. Along with Unlimited, the duo should make quick work of Woolite and p3rmm. What is more, the Greek maestro will have to adopt a more calm approach especially in this match. As we have seen before, not all goes according to plan in a best-of-five, so having a backup plan is a must against any opponent. As long as they do not throw him off his game, all eyes will be on Konstantinos to wreak havoc against the Polish Enemy
Potential outcome: This should be a straightforward series not because Denial is a weak opponent, but because they lack a leader. I personally expect a 3-1 or 3-0 scoreline in favour of the Wolves given their solid bottom lane and jungler presence. The only way for the Poles to surprise their opponents is to cripple one of the three enemy lanes and exploit that weakness, thus gathering the attention of Amazing.
Voidle, Odoamne and FebivenThe Cloud 9 line-up is packed with talent from all across Europe. Since they had to release star jungler k0u from the starting five, due to age restrictions, the team has been playing with 17-year-old Danish player Santorin. The Dane has been adapting well to his new setting and hopefully, the team will be more than prepared and prove their worth as an LCS competitor.
Player to watch: Fabian 'Febiven' Diepstraten
The young mid laner has showcased great prowess in the Challenger Series. Many LCS pros, Alex Ich among others, have stated that the Dutch player offers great insight and has improved tremendously under the Cloud 9 banner. The leader of C9 and feared Riven player, Fabian is to play a key part in his team's performance. Locking horns with Selfie, he would have to dispose of his opponent and do his best to alleviate the pressure from bot lane where Hjärnan and Voidle have their work cut out for them.
Potential outcome: While Cloud 9 have been a dominant force in the European Challenger series, the recent swap of k0u and Santorin raises a lot of questions. Both teams have their respective chances as there are players on each front which can be the "x factor" in this series. The adaptation of C9's new jungler will be the key point here. In addition, the ability of Hjärnan and Voidle to withstand the relentless pressure from MrRallez and Migxa can also have an immense impact on the total scoreline. Taking all of this into account, I predict that unless Supa Hot Crew fails to deliver, we are in for a great series with a 3-2, regardless of the winner.
The bringers of destruction, NiP.On the NiP side, the team finally has a chance to wash away the embarrassment from last winter. This time, the ninjas are hungrier and stronger than ever. The swap of Amin in favour of Hulberto (age related) has been working well for the team who had a very good showing at the Copenhagen Games last weekend. With enough experience under their belts and incredibly strong laners even on par with LCS competitors, the NiP team is the heavy favorite in this match.
Player to watch: Morten 'ZoroZero' Rosenquist
The top lane ace will be facing a worthy opponent in Millenium's Kev1n. With breakout picks and the shift in meta from patch 4.5, ZoroZero has a wide variety of options in play style and champion picks. Regarded as the best top laner in Europe by peers and fans alike, Morten is presented with a perfect chance to showcase his dominance and amend his silly mistake which cost NiP an LCS spot.
Potential outcome: Without a doubt I do believe that the NiP squad will take down Millenium. The constellation of players and the time they had to mesh and create the death machine that they are has demonstrated not once or twice that LCS teams are not an obstacle. In addition, nukeduck has expanded his champion pool and is no longer a one trick pony when it comes to champion diversity. The only real weakness of the Ninjas is their mental game which can be their greatest enemy. As stated earlier, everything can happen in a best-of-five series and they are more than aware of that. As long as they are the winners in their mind, the score shall follow.
The Summer Promotion tournament begins tomorrow Thursday 24th April at 16:00 CEST. The opener will be Ninjas in Pyjamas against Millenium. For all the news, interviews and live report, follow onGamers.com.
