Ethan Hawke Terrifies In New Black Phone Trailer-October 2024

Universal Pictures has released a new trailer for The Black Phone, director Scott Derrickson's (Doctor Strange, Sinister) adaptation of Joe Hill's short story from the writer's collection 20th Century Ghosts. The film is slated for a June 24 theatrical release.

You'll probably know in the first 15 seconds whether this film is for you--the clip starts off with a young boy coming across a magician's van, and in comes Ethan Hawke out of nowhere as the creepy serial-killer owner of the van. He nabs the kid, and then things take a series of sadistic and unpredictable turns. Finney, the 13-year-old boy, is placed in a soundproof basement. Then, as the synopsis reads: "When a disconnected phone on the wall begins to ring, Finney discovers that he can hear the voices of the killer’s previous victims. And they are dead set on making sure that what happened to them doesn't happen to Finney."

Co-adapted by C. Robert Gargill (Doctor Strange, Sinister), the film stars Hawke, Mason Thomes (For All Mankind) as the boy Finney, Jeremy Davies (Twin Peaks), Madeleine McGraw (Secrets of Sulphur Springs), and E. Roger Mitchell (Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues). In addition to directing, Derrickson also co-produced and co-wrote The Black Phone.

The film already had its world premiere at festivals last year, and has a small smattering of reviews on Metacritic. The Black Phone has, so far, been receiving generally positive reviews from critics.
