Entourage's Doug Ellin Defends The Show From "Wave Of Righteous PC Culture"
Entourage's Doug Ellin Defends The Show From "Wave Of Righteous PC Culture"-October 2024
Oct 21, 2024 1:32 AM

In a new interview, Entourage creator Doug Ellin says he feels HBO has given the series the cold shoulder since it ended in 2011. Speaking with Yahoo Entertainment, the screenwriter and director says that despite an eight-season run, high ratings, and many award nominations, he thinks HBO has unfairly distanced itself from the show--which has only served to hurt his career.

Blaming a "wave of righteous PC culture," Ellin says that he doesn't view Entourage as "high art, but it was a pretty accurate portrayal of how people [acted] at that time in Hollywood." The realities of Hollywood then, Ellin explains, were exactly what Entourage set out to reflect--which he now feels the show has unfairly gotten a reputation of celebrating.

"I don't think Entourage was this vulgar boyfest that people like to paint it as now," said Ellin. "When we came out, the New York Times said we were the smartest show on television!"

Elsewhere in the interview, Ellin speculates that the culture shifting in a more progressive direction since Entourage also cost him another series at HBO, which coincidentally would have starred a Sopranos cast member: "I did a pilot with Michael Imperioli, Michael Rappaport, and Ed Burns that they passed on, which I'll never forgive them for… whether they thought it was good or not, I earned my chance to have a second shot, and they put some other pretty crappy shows on [instead]."

Even if you weren't a fan of Entourage, the Q&A is an interesting read--full of insights both into where in hindsight Ellin feels he could have been more critical of Hollywood with the show, and also how if he had to do it over again, where he might have taken the series. Ultimately, though, Ellin says he's "proud of everything we did on Entourage." In 2020, Ellin said he is "considering" a reboot of the show.
