Far into the PlayStation development of Square's Final Fantasy VII, PC gamers began to ask, "Will we ever get to play too?" When Sony acquired exclusive rights to the game for the PlayStation, we wondered if the game would ever see the PC.
After a bidding war over who would actually bring the massive title over to the PC, Eidos Interactive, publisher for the best-selling title Tomb Raider, has confirmed to GameSpot News that it has acquired the rights to publish the PC version of Final Fantasy VII.
Details about what the exact title will look like and what major enhancements, if any, the game will receive have yet to be decided. Currently, the game will support 3D accelerators, but Eidos wouldn't give specifics on whether it would be using a specific 3D accelerator API or if this would be done through Microsoft's Direct 3D and Direct X 5.0 technologies.
Eidos also confirmed that there would be a demo released close to the US launch date of the game sometime in the middle of 1998.
With Square's cache of current games on the PlayStation - including Bushido Blade and Tobal and upcoming titles like Saga Frontier, Einhander, Parasite Eve, Xenogears, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Chocobo Dungeon - this could be the start of something good for PC-based game addicts who haven't experienced the great level of game design or originality that Square is known for on consoles.
So if you don't have a PlayStation yet and are dying to see this title, without all the PlayStation limitations, your wait is coming closer to a close.
