Eidos Buys Crystal Dynamics
Eidos Buys Crystal Dynamics-March 2024
Mar 31, 2025 4:29 AM

London, England - The deal is done, and the ink is almost dry on documents finalising the outright purchase of California-based Crystal Dynamics. GameSpot had a word with Scott Steinberg, Crystal D's vice president of marketing, just as ECTS was winding down. He expressed high hopes that with a power hitter like Eidos tending to the details of marketing and distribution, Crystal can focus more on game development - and hopefully realise more lucrative sales of products at retail.

Steinberg said Gex 64 will remain with Midway, and Color Game Boy Gex will remain with Los Angeles-based distributor SVG. All other games in development, however, will shift to the Eidos stable. Expressing confidence in Eidos as an owner, he said Eidos had "respect for the studio model." And he expects little to no reduction to Crystal Dynamics staff. As it turns out, 90 percent of the more than 100 Crystal Dynamics employees are part of various game development teams. There seems to be little room for much duplication on the management front as only a dozen or so employees are considered management.

The big games Crystal Dynamics had on display at ECTS were Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver and Unholy War, both PlayStation games.
