It's been 30 years since Eddie Murphy donned the varsity jacket and badge of former Detroit cop Axel Foley in the Beverly Hills Cop franchise, but Netflix is bringing back Foley one more time in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F.
Axel F. refers to the name of the theme song that became wildly popular in the 1980s and is forever tied to the franchise and Murphy's career. The trailer looks like the next installment has upped the action from Beverly Hills Cop 3, considered the franchise's low point, but brings Axel and his crew together again. Check it out below.
After Foley's estranged daughter’s (Taylour Page) life is threatened, he finds himself teaming up with a new partner (Joseph Gordon-Levitt). As you saw from the trailer, BHC's Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and John Taggart (John Ashton) are back again to help Axel uncover a conspiracy and corruption within the Beverly Hills police department.
This fourth entry in the series was initially announced back in the mid-1990s, under the production of Murphy's own company before things fell apart and the actor moved on. The film had a resurgence a decade later in 2006, when producer Jerry Bruckheimer announced his intention to resurrect the franchise, though he eventually gave up his reins.
Talking to MTV at the time, Murphy said he wanted to make a fourth Beverly Hills Cop film to make up for the fact that the third film was "horrible" and "he didn't want to leave [the series] like that." Murphy was so intent on continuing the story on his terms, that he was shopping around a BHC series that would follow the adventures of his son.
No official date has been announced, but look for it in 2024.
