After concentrating its efforts on delivering the Sega Dreamcast console's graphics chip, PowerVR surprised the PC hardware community by revealing in June that it had created a new 3D chip for the PC. This week at ECTS, four vendors have announced products based on the KYRO, a chip co-produced by PowerVR and ST Microelectronics. Three Taiwanese board makers (Yuan, PowerColor, and InnoVision) as well as VideoLogic (a division of PowerVR's parent company) are expected to release KYRO boards in October. PowerVR says an undisclosed number of other vendors will announce their KYRO boards closer to the October launch.
According to PowerVR, KYRO cards will match or beat the performance of 3D boards based on Nvidia's GeForce256 SDR or GeForce MX chips. As for price, the VideoLogic card will retail for about US$150, which is competitive with Nvidia-based products.
