Confirming rumors and leaks, Gearbox announced a new expansion for Borderlands 2 that will help lay the groundwork for the upcoming Borderlands 3 during Microsoft's E3 2019 press conference. "Commander Lilith & The Fight for Sanctuary" will be a free expansion for the first 30 days to anyone who already owns Borderlands 2 or The Handsome Collection--which also just so happens to be one of this month's PlayStation Plus games, and available today through Xbox Game Pass.
In Commander Lilith, the Vault Map has been stolen and Sanctuary is under attack. You can play as Maya, Salvador, Axton, Zer0, Gaige, or Krieg from Borderlands 2 and its previous DLC expansions. The expansion adds a new original story including some returning cast members and new characters, but as always the real star is the loot. A new "Effervescent" tier has been added, which boasts high stats along with rainbow textures.

The DLC will be free to download until July 9, at which point it will cost $20. Gearbox doesn't recommend starting the content until you're level 30, but you can actually create a brand-new level 30 character in the Select Character screen to jump right into the Commander Lilith content.
