Dreamcast Gets Toolkit Upgrade
Dreamcast Gets Toolkit Upgrade-October 2024
Oct 19, 2024 7:54 PM

Microsoft has announced that its Windows CE toolkit 2.0 for Sega Dreamcast will be available this October. The latest version of the toolkit adds new interactive music and Internet technologies, allowing game developers to optimize their titles for Sega's popular platform.

Toolkit 2.0 includes the use of DirectMusic, a technology allowing developers to add more immersive audio to a player's game experience by reacting to that player's actions. For developers waiting to add Internet features, the toolkit adds new options for creating custom Internet interfaces for browsing or connecting to gaming servers. Programmers using the toolkit will also have more ability to optimize their title for Microsoft's game programming API (application programming interface), DirectX 6.1. A new version of DirectX, called DirectX 7.0, is due for a PC release tomorrow (a Dreamcast upgrade for DirectX 7.0 for Dreamcast will come later on).

While rumors on the web currently indicate that several developers have not been using the Windows CE to program their Dreamcast games, Microsoft retorted in a release by saying that more than 70 titles are being developed with Windows CE. The company listed Sega, Acclaim, Infogrames, Kalisto, Konami, and Majesco.
