Id Software's Doom is leaving the fiery pits of hell and making its way to television screens. American television company USA Network has ordered a TV pilot for Masters of Doom, produced by brothers Dave and James Franco.

Masters of Doom is a 2003 non-fiction book written by Rolling Stone contributing editor David Kushner. It recounts the story of id Sofware co-founders John Carmack and John Romero, best friends turned bitter rivals as they create one of the most influential first-person shooters in gaming--Doom. Deadline reports that Masters of Doom, who's television script is being written by Tom Bissel (Gears of War: Judgment, Batman: Arkham Origins, Battlefield Hardline), is an anthology series.

Dave and James Franco's production company Ramona Films will produce the series, alongside The Gotham Group (Abduction, The Maze Runner). Universal Content Productions (Mr. Robot, The Umbrella Academy) is also attached. No further details are known, including casting announcements and release date.

2016's Doom released to universal praise. In our review, we said, "Doom is the product of a tradition as old as shooters, and while it's not the model to follow in every case, modern shooters could learn a thing or two from Doom's honed and unadulterated identity." The sequel, Doom Eternal, is slated to launch on November 22 for Google Stadia, Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
