While it wasn't set to happen for another year, Disney has preemptively delayed the next D23 fan convention. The news was announced in a tweet, revealing the next D23 will occur September 9-11, 2022, rather than in 2021.
"D23 Expo 2022 will be a celebration unlike any other, as we give fans a first look at the incredible plans for the 100th anniversary of The Walt Disney Company," a statement reads. This news comes on the heels of several other conventions being delayed, canceled, or shifting to virtual events due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Previously, San Diego Comic-Con was done virtually, and the upcoming New York Comic-Con will be as well.

Typically, D23 occurs every other year, giving Disney fans an opportunity to see footage from upcoming movies and TV shows, as well as see announcements about upcoming films, theme park expansions, and more. At the most recent D23, in 2019, Marvel Studios announced live-action Disney+ shows for She-Hulk, Moon Knight, and Ms. Marvel.
Interestingly, next year's Star Wars Celebration was canceled back in June. That event will also return in 2022. Without D23 or Celebration in 2021, it remains to be seen when news about the next Star Wars movie will be announced.
