Devil May Cry laments 10 million shipped-January 2024
Jan 8, 2025 8:54 PM

Between last week's launch of Resident Evil 5 and last month's big Street Fighter IV release, Capcom has had plenty of impressive multimillion sales figures to bandy about. Today the publisher announced a less-expected milestone when it confirmed that the Devil May Cry franchise has shipped 10 million copies worldwide.

Since debuting on the PlayStation 2 in 2001, the Devil May Cry franchise has built a reputation for stylish action punctuated by otherworldly adversaries and over-the-top storylines.

The most recent installment of the series--Devil May Cry 4--launched in February 2008 on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 before being ported to the PC. Although some Sony fans initially balked at the once-exclusive franchise going multiplatform, it proved a wise decision because Devil May Cry 4 became the best-selling installment of the series to date.

Capcom put the game's worldwide sales at 2.3 million in May 2008, although today's announcement trimmed that figure back to 2.2 million copies sold. No explanation was given for the disparity.

Although Devil May Cry has proven tremendously successful for Capcom, it is not even close to the publisher's biggest series, Resident Evil. As of that same May 2008 update, Resident Evil games had sold 34.5 million copies worldwide, trailed by Mega Man and Street Fighter at 28 million and 25 million, respectively.
