Destiny 2 Project Lead: No Partners Asked Us To Hold Back Performance On Other Platforms; 4K on XB1X Being Evaluated-December 2024
Dec 26, 2024 6:11 PM

Bungie’s Project lead on Destiny 2, Mark Noseworthy, took to Twitter to answer some questions regarding the game's performance, console parity, and 4K on the Xbox One X.

Recently it was announced that the sequel to the original Destiny would run at 30FPS on all consoles, including Microsoft’s “most powerful console ever created”, the Xbox One X. In addition, Bungie announced that Destiny 2 would run in 4K on the PS4 Pro, but didn’t promise the same for Microsoft’s enhanced Xbox One console.

Following these announcements, some suggested that performance on the Xbox One X was being hold back due to the less powerful hardware in the PS4 Pro, and Sony’s marketing deal with Activision. However, this isn’t the case, if Bungie’s project lead on the game is to be believed.

Noseworthy stated that Destiny 2’s performance isn’t being hold back to appease a partner, and added that they have never been asked to do such a thing. According to the project lead, the game is being optimized for each platform’s technology.

“We would never hold back game performance on a platform to appease a partner”, he said. “No partners asked us to either.”

Regarding the game’s framerate on consoles, Noseworthy explained that 30FPS is a necessity to deliver Destiny 2’s AI counts, environment sizes, and the number of players as all of these are CPU-bound.

Destiny 2 will run at 30FPS on all consoles, while the PC version will have an uncapped framerateOn the subject of deliver Destiny in 4K on the Xbox One X, Noseworthy said that the team is currently busy on delivering the game on the launch consoles, and that 4K on the Xbox One X is being evaluated. “We are currently evaluating 4K for Xbox One X. It launches after D2 and so we are focused on the launch consoles right now.”

Destiny will be released on PS4 and Xbox One on September 6, while the PC version will release one month later on October 24. It was also confirmed by Bungie's Luke Smith that the PlayStation 4 timed exclusive content will launch in 2018 for the other platforms.
